1 pound ground turkey
1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
2 (14 ounce) cans black beans, rinsed and drained
3 cups cubed sweet potato
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
1 tablespoon chili powder
2 teaspoons ground cumin
salt and ground black pepper to taste
1 pinch cayenne pepper, or to taste
⅛ cup shredded Cheddar cheese, or to taste
⅛ cup fresh cilantro, or to taste
⅛ cup sour cream, or to taste

Directions

  1. Heat a large soup pot over medium heat. Brown turkey until crumbly and no longer pink, about 15 minutes.

  2. Add tomatoes, black beans, sweet potato, onion, garlic, pumpkin pie spice, chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper, and cayenne to the pot. Simmer on low heat until sweet potatoes are soft and fully cooked, about 3 hours.

  3. Ladle chili into bowls and garnish with Cheddar cheese, fresh cilantro, and sour cream.

Recipe Note

I love the blend of sweetness from the sweet potatoes and the little bit of kick from the cayenne pepper. The pumpkin pie spice seems a little strange, but it adds something that makes this recipe a bit different then your usual turkey chili...in a good way!
