Ingredients

1 cup dates, pitted and chopped
¾ cup boiling water
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 egg
½ cup white sugar
¾ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¾ cup semisweet chocolate chips, melted
¼ cup butter, melted
1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ cup chopped walnuts

Directions

  1. Combine chopped dates, boiling water, and soda. Stir, and allow to cool.

  2. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and nuts.

  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat together egg, salt, sugar, and vanilla. Blend together melted chocolate and melted butter or margarine, stir into batter. Stir in date mixture. Add flour mixture, and stir to mix. Scrape into a greased 9 x 5 inch loaf pan.

  4. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 1 hour, or until it tests done. Cool in pan 10 minutes. Remove from pan.

Recipe Note

This is a delicious tea loaf, that cuts better the second day. Serve with a spread.
