1 medium onion, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
2 (10 ounce) cans zesty-style peeled, diced tomatoes
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
½ tablespoon white sugar
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
salt and ground black pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and celery, saute until onion has softened and turned translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, basil, oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a boil.

  2. Reduce heat and simmer for about 5 minutes. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
